The method

Your birth is the Personality moment. The Design moment is when the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees of the zodiac earlier, about 88 to 89 days before birth. The calculator finds it to within a second by stepping along the Sun’s real path.
At both moments it takes thirteen positions: the Sun, the Earth (opposite the Sun), the North and South Nodes (true node), the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, from the same astronomical engine as our birth charts.
Each position falls in one of 64 gates around the zodiac, 5.625 degrees each, starting with gate 41 at 2 degrees Aquarius. Each gate has six lines of 0.9375 degrees.
A channel is defined when both of its gates are switched on, by either moment. A center is defined when a defined channel touches it.
Your type comes from which centers are defined and whether a motor reaches the Throat; your authority from the defined centers in a fixed order (Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Heart, G center); your profile from the line of your Personality Sun over the line of your Design Sun.

The type rules

Manifestor: has an open Sacral and a motor (the Heart, the Solar Plexus or the Root) joined to the Throat by an unbroken chain of defined channels.
Generator: has a defined Sacral and no motor joined to the Throat.
Manifesting Generator: has a defined Sacral and a motor (the Sacral itself, the Heart, the Solar Plexus or the Root) joined to the Throat by an unbroken chain of defined channels.
Projector: has an open Sacral, at least one defined channel, and no motor joined to the Throat.
Reflector: has no defined channel at all, so all nine centers are open.

Sources and checks

The gate order and degrees follow the gate wheel (the Rave Mandala) as published in Lynda Bunnell and Ra Uru Hu, The Definitive Book of Human Design (2011), and the widely reproduced gate to zodiac table (for example this one): gate 41 from 2° 00′ Aquarius, gate 25 from 28° 15′ Pisces, gate 1 from 13° 15′ Scorpio. The nine centers and 36 channels are the standard chart. Planet positions come from astronomy-engine, checked against Swiss Ephemeris.

We test the calculator against eleven published charts covering all five types, with birth times from Astro-Databank, and it matches every one on type, authority, profile and both Sun gates. Ra Uru Hu’s own chart (born 9 April 1948, 00:14, Montreal) is one: a 5/1 Manifestor with Splenic authority, Personality Sun in gate 51 line 5 and Design Sun in gate 61 line 1. Others include Barack Obama (a 6/2 Projector), Albert Einstein (a 1/4 Generator, born before standard time, on local mean time), Donald Trump (a 1/3 Manifesting Generator) and Gore Vidal (a 1/3 Reflector).

Authority

The inner authorities

How each design is said to make clear decisions.

Emotional (Solar Plexus): Your Solar Plexus is defined, so your feelings move in a wave. There is no truth in the now: let a decision settle over hours or days, and decide when you feel calm and clear rather than at the high or the low.
Sacral: Your gut answers in the moment, often as a sound or a pull before words. Let people ask you yes or no questions, and trust the first response over the reasons your mind comes up with.
Splenic: Your Spleen speaks once, quietly, in the moment: a sense of what is safe and right now. It does not repeat itself, so the practice is noticing that first instinct and acting on it.
Ego manifested (Heart): Your Heart connects to your Throat. The question is what you want and are willing to commit to; listen to what comes out of your mouth when you speak about it.
Ego projected (Heart): Your Heart is your authority. Ask what you really want and what is in it for you; your willpower is honest about what it will and will not commit to.
Self projected (G center): Your G center connects to your Throat. Talk a decision through with someone you trust and listen to yourself: what you say about direction and identity tells you what is right.
Mental (outer authority): No inner authority sits below the Throat. Decisions come clear by talking them over with a few trusted people, in places that feel right, and hearing yourself think out loud.
Lunar: With every center open, clarity comes over time. Give big decisions about a month, a full cycle of the Moon, and talk them over as you go.

About Human Design

What is Human Design?

Human Design is a system put together by Ra Uru Hu in 1987. It combines the zodiac with the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the chakras and ideas from the Kabbalah, and reads them from two moments: your birth and a moment about three months before it. The result is a type, a strategy for making decisions and an inner authority, which many people use as a lens for self-reflection.

Why does it need my birth time?

The Moon moves through a gate in about ten hours, and the Sun moves about one line a day, so the time can change your gates, your profile and sometimes your type. If you do not know your time, tick the box: the calculator uses noon and checks every half hour of the day to tell you which results hold all day.

What is the design moment?

It is the moment the Sun stood 88 degrees of the zodiac before its place at your birth, about 88 to 89 days earlier. Human Design calls the birth chart the Personality (shown in black on most charts) and this earlier chart the Design (shown in red). Both count when working out which channels and centers are defined.

Which type is the most common?

Generators and Manifesting Generators together make up about 70 in every 100 people. Projectors are about 20, Manifestors about 9 and Reflectors about 1. These are the shares commonly quoted in Human Design teaching.

Why might another calculator give a different result?

Usually because of the birth time or time zone entered. Calculators also differ on small choices: this one uses the true lunar node, as most Human Design software does. A different node choice can move the node gates, which only rarely changes the type.

Is my birth data stored?

No. The chart is worked out in your browser, so your birth date and time are never sent to us. The place search sends only the letters you type, to find matching towns. If you made your Big Three chart on this site, the calculator picks up the same details from your browser.
