How it works

How the number is worked out

Three short sums, done by hand in a minute. The calculator shows yours the same way.

The method

  1. Take the month, the day and the year of your birth.
  2. Reduce each one on its own: add its digits, and keep adding until one digit is left. Stop early if you reach 11, 22 or 33.
  3. Add the three results together.
  4. Reduce that total the same way. What is left is your life path number.

Example: born 15 July 1990

Month
7
Day
15: 1 + 5 = 6
Year
1990: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
Together
7 + 6 + 1 = 14, then 1 + 4 = 5

Life path 5. Read life path 5.

Example with a master number: born 9 April 1980

Month
4
Day
9
Year
1980: 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18, then 1 + 8 = 9
Together
4 + 9 + 9 = 22 (a master number, kept)

Life path 22. Adding every digit at once would give 31, then 4, and lose the master number, which is why the parts are reduced first. Read life path 22.

Questions

About life path numbers

What is a life path number?
Your life path number is the main number in numerology. It comes from your full date of birth, reduced to a single digit or to one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, and it is read as a sketch of your nature and the themes you keep meeting. Read your number as a mirror for reflection: it describes tendencies, and the choices stay yours.
How do you calculate a life path number?
Reduce the month, the day and the year of your birth on their own: add the digits until one digit is left, but stop if you reach 11, 22 or 33. Then add the three results and reduce the total the same way. For 15 July 1990: the month is 7, the day is 1 + 5 = 6, the year is 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 10, then 1. Then 7 + 6 + 1 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5, so the life path is 5.
What are master numbers?
11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers because they are kept instead of being reduced. Each one carries its base number as well (11 has the 2 inside it, 22 the 4, 33 the 6), with the themes turned up. If your number is a master number, read its base number page too.
Why do some calculators give a different number?
Some add every digit of the date in one go. Most of the time that lands on the same number, but it can skip a master number. For 9 April 1980, reducing the parts first gives 4 + 9 + 9 = 22; adding all the digits at once gives 31, then 4. We reduce the month, day and year separately, the most common method, so master numbers are not lost.
Is numerology the same as astrology?
No, they are separate systems. Numerology works from the numbers in your birth date (and, in fuller readings, your name). Astrology works from where the Sun, Moon and planets were when you were born. Many people like to read both side by side: your life path next to your Sun, Moon and Rising.
Is my birth date stored?
No. The number is worked out in your browser, so your birth date is never sent to us or kept. If you made your chart on this site, the calculator picks up the same date from your browser to save you typing it again.
